CLOG AWAY BREAKS invariably spawn - in line with the "Clog Active" philosophy - many parallel activities. This mid-October weekend fitted perfectly into this concept with
horseriding and canoeing complementing our range of
walks.
- HORSERIDING was on our door - closer you could not get, for the hostel was actually part of the Cwmfforest Riding Centre. Some of us including Gill made the most of this opportunity.
Cwmfforest's resident stallion is spirited but good natured. Practically everyone - so I understand - gets their equestrian skills on one of the many rather more docile mares!
- WALKS. There was a splendid variety here, including high level walks up to 800 m and more gentle strolls along the River Wye.
Walks were of the very energetic, medium or downright relaxing gentle kind. Jim's Saturday walk to Waun Fach was probably moderately energetic in a relaxing sort of way.
- Castell Dinas (Friday 16). On arrival, Tony led a short circular walk near our hostel.
See Castell Dinas Circular.
- Twmpa (Saturday 17) Helen led this fast and energetic 12 miler which took in Twmpa (ca 680 m) and Waun Fach (ca 810 m) on the same day and seemed to leave everyone pleasantly exhausted at the end of the day.
- Waun Fach (Saturday 17). This was led by Jim and took us to about 810 m. To find out more, why not see
Waun Fach Circular.
- Wye Valley (Sunday 18). This was a gentle walk led by Jim, partly for the scenery and perhaps as a counter balance to Saturday's activities. Jim's walk was based on Glasbury, about half way between Talgarth and Hay-on-Wye.
- Cwmdu (Sunday 18). This took us to about 450 m, just below the clouds and was led by Eric and Gavin.
See High Road to Cwmdu.
- More Sunday Walks (Sunday 18). There were several more Sunday walks, one of which was led by Helen.
- Table Mountain. (Monday 19) No, not Cape Town but the 450 m Table Mountain towering above Crickhowell. Jim and Penny proposed a 4½ mile walk up this mountain before they returned home on Monday.
Oh, to paddle your own canoe!
That's a "CLOGgie" thing to do!
- CANOEING. The River Wye at Crickhowell was the venue for this activity - potentially wet, but not for the wet. Dan and Gavin were some of our party who took up this watery challenge.
So as you can see, there was plenty to do, and with the benign weather, there was never a dull moment. That's how we like CLOG away breaks!
