Arrive Whernside Ingleborough Penyghent Goodbye Thanks Maps Links + Icons Reviews Read Me |
One of the special attractions of the Yorkshire Dales is that they do not receive as many visitors as The Lake District or The Peak District; hence the Dales give one more the feeling of wide-open spaces - open to the sky and to the elements.
We had three quite relaxing walks, of about 10 to 12 miles each. In fact, we took in a different "peak" every day, starting on Saturday with Whernside, at 736 m, the highest in the Yorkshire Dales. Sunday's walk had us scaling Ingleborough, which at 724 m, is probably the second highest in the Yorkshire Dales - I say "probably" because nobody on the web seems to state this. On Monday, we went up Penyghent whose height is officially 694 m.
The elements were reasonably benign to us, except for some rain towards the end of day one and a fair bit of wind on top on day two. More-or-less right for walking - not too hot, not too cold.
As with all London IVC "M & M" Weekends, evening meals on the three full days were in-house. These in-house "dining get-togethers" foster a sense of community and are a nice way of revisiting and exchanging our experiences of the day that has just been, and of anticipating the day to come.
The pictorial descriptions that follow on these pages, echo some of my experiences. I would in no way claim that these pages give a complete description of the visit.
Especial thanks to Adrian for organizing this away break, and to Alan and the two Johns for leading the walks. Also, thanks to Jason, John D and assistants for the cooking. They all freely drew on their time, resources and experience, to give us all some nice days in an interesting part of England. Thanks, of course, also to the car drivers and all who contributed to this - yet another - successful London IVC "M & M" away break.
