Hathersage - Here we Come

Having left Blackhorse Road Station in East London at about 10:15, we arrived in Hathersage at around 15:00. With a one hour stop on the way, it was certainly under 4 hours travelling time. Excellent driving by Nigel! On the M1 we counted 66 Edie Stobart Lorries, 65 travelling towards the Capital. Edie Stobart seems to have cornered the road haulage market. Any way, diversions aside, we arrived in good shape. The "Little John Inn" in Hathersage beckoned later in the day. (The name is an example of the numerous Robin Hood connections which abound in these parts). Thoughts of plans for tomorrow's walks were consolidating!

This was our residence in Hathersage. The residence might have been that of the owner of one of the wire and cutlery mills that once flourished in Hathersage before moving to mass production facilities in Sheffield.




The lounge reflected the Victorian style: high ceilings and ornamental plaster work.




We visited the "Little John Inn" (which you see in the backgound) later in the evening. However, before that, we had a chance to stop and admire the ornamental signpost. This was put up in 1914 by the proud inhabitants of Hathersage in a style that still harked back to pre WWI days. At that time, storm clouds were already gathering on the political horizon, heralding changes undreamt of! But for us, 100 years later, the culinary delights of the "Little John Inn" awaited.
