Goodbye Crich

It's been an enjoyable few days. First it was walking in the Peak District, in Hathersage with its historical connections. Then it was indulging in a bit of time travel, to see how our forebears travelled in their towns and cities, using the then new-fangled electric transport.

Now it was time to leave. The nearest station was Whatstandwell. This station was formerly on the Midland main line from London St Pancras to Manchester and still bore the traces of that august railway company. Within about four hours I was back at my front door, my mind filled with the interesting experiences of the extended weekend.

Whatstandwell is a curious name that looks pretty
when framed by a Midland Railway style name board.




The Midland red paint also graces the restored footbridge of Victorian vintage. The tunnel takes the railway on to Matlock and "Peak Rail", a short heritage line extension to Rowsley South (in Chatsworth House country).
