These pages contain a record, in pictures and narrative, of walking in the Great Outdoors. I would like to share these walks with you, the visitor to my website. These walks focus on what I like to think of as important aspects of a reasonably healthy lifestyle - exercise and discovery of new experiences. Indeed, life is a continuous learning process - a process of constant renewal.

Many of these walks I have led and devised myself. Others are walks in which I have participated and in these cases, I gratefully acknowledge the contributions of colleagues and friends. Visits away from the London area generally last two or more full days; such visits often involve some interesting sight-seeing to complement the walks, and this aspect is also included in the appropriate pages.

On Bossington Hill, near Minehead, the sea, gorse, hills and mist all combine to produce an unforgettable view of the coast line from Porlock to Lynmouth.

I have divided this page into sections describing walks in: England, Wales, Scotland and Germany. I have also included a "Timeline List" of the walks. As you will see, you can also conveniently access these sections directly from the index above. As already mentioned, for many walks I have given their paths in terms of longitude and latitude, so that you can, where appropriate, superimpose the paths on Ordnance Survey® and OSM® maps.

I have very many items just waiting to go onto this web site; although I obviously like to be out of doors, rainy days thus give me a lot to do, web-wise! Of course, as and when my time allows, I shall try to update this page with new and/or as yet unpublished walks.

I hope you will find my modest efforts on this page interesting, and that when you leave this page, you have seen at least something that is new. If so, this page will have fulfilled its intended purpose!

My walks in England are arranged by counties. While the walks focus mainly on the Home Counties, they also include counties further afield, especially Cumbria, for the ever popular Lake District. The walks in England are arranged by the county in which they start; for example, the Chingford-Epping walk is listed under "London" even though most of the walk takes place in Essex. In addition, you may find the walk index useful for relating English place names and landscape features to the corresponding walks web pages. Here you will see some "walking visits" to opposite ends of the Principality, namely to Snowdonia and to Llangollen in North Wales and to The Black Mountains in South Wales. Of course, these walks hardly cover all that Wales has to offer the keen hiker!

On the way to Snowdon, the highest mountain in Wales, the Pyg Track gives us this view of Llyn Llydaw, stretched out in all its mountain glory.

Our Scottish visit you see described here was based on Fort William. Apart from Ben Nevis (a must-do, of course), our schedule included Glencoe and visits to some of the Islands via Mallaig and Oban.

2011 May 24-31 : Highland Fling 2

On the Isle of Muck ("muck" is Gallic for "porpoise"), the single 1.5 mile long road (or track) links Port Mor with the hamlet of Gallanach and offers splendid views of Rum and beyond to Skye.

Odin's Forest (Odenwald) borders on the eastern edge of Heidelberg, with its famous university. Odin's Forest is made up of both deciduous and conifer trees. The River Neckar, immortalized by Mark Twain in 1878, is an important feature of the landscape, a landscape in which the numerous castles testify to a rich history, stretching back to mediaeval times and beyond (when knights were bold ... etc.). In this area I have done numerous walks of which those you see here are just "a taster". (You can also reach this section directly, from your Browser, with "tinyurl.com/greatodin".)

CLOG Visit to Heidelberg : 2019 September 08-15

The Neckar Valley in Germany's Odin's Forest is full of interesting views. Here we see the erstwhile mediaeval fortified "town" of Dilsberg. We can enjoy this panorama from a view point high up in the forest above the river bank. For the hiker, it's a pleasant place to stop awhile and reflect on the scene in particular and on the world in general.
